Building Relationships and Changing Lives with Lesley Heard – EP12
“Those moments when I want to quit, I go back to the relationships.” – Lesley Heard
As founder & director of Total City Sports Volleyball in Austin, Texas, Lesley Heard never seen herself being an entrepreneur and business owner. Fortunately, her background from being a hard working athlete, and former volleyball player herself, is what helped prepare her to build this small non-profit, with only a few kids, to now over 700. She has developed a program that not only provides low-income girls the opportunity to be a better volleyball player, but also teaches them how to take that same work ethic used in sports and apply it to life.
Lesley Heard is the Founder and Director of Total City Sports Volleyball, a non-profit organization in Austin aimed at engaging and developing youth through affordable, elite volleyball training. The majority of their athletes are under-resourced and considered at-risk. Lesley is passionate about using the platform of sports to encourage youth, develop strong leaders, and transform the lives of athletes and their families.
Lesley played collegiate volleyball at Texas State University and helped lead her team to a Southland Conference Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in 2004. She was Co-President of the Texas State Student Athletic Advisory Council, won the Oak Farms Dairy Academic Achievement Award as a freshman, and was on the Capital One Bank Commissioners Honor Roll. Lesley transferred to the University of Texas and was a member of the NIRSA Division 1 National Championship club volleyball team in 2007 and 2008 finalist. In 2008, she was awarded NIRSA Division 1 First Team All-American. She received her bachelor degree in Mathematics and spent several years in investment management before starting Total City Sports Volleyball in 2011.
Lesley and her husband, Carlton, have a 10 month old son, love playing sand and indoor volleyball in Austin, and are active members of Austin Stone Community Church.
